My once-a-year nod to the Advanced Theory

Idolator's post about Killing Joke today, in addition to letting me rock out to "Requiem" at work, made me wonder whether this band was Advanced from practically the beginning of its career. Some evidence in its favor:

  • Initially mistaken for fascists
  • Entire band relocated to Iceland to wait out apocalypse
  • Fluid membership (including, for three days, a former member of the Smiths)
  • One member went on to become a sought-after producer
  • Singer's solo album embraced, among other genres, rap, and he delivered a lecture defending this album and subsequently retired to a tiny island in New Zealand
  • Litigiousness
  • Original lineup reunited and got back to basics
Over to you, Jason.

Very impressive credentials! I have to confess that I don't know much about Killing Joke, which usually disqualifies people from Advancement (just kidding). What strikes me as the best argument for their Advancement is the lecture. As you know, talking about your music in grandiose terms is a hallmark of Advancement, but this guy took it to another level. More research is definitely called for, especially with regard to the quality of the band's music.

Ralls and Blidges
How come y'all didn't like Boris when they were 1/3 black, all Texan, and called King's X? Seriously. I mean, I like 'em both, Boris moreso, but when they get fast and start singing loud and a lot, I'm just saying...this proves my Cibo Matto Axiom: Anything already popular becomes more popular when it involves a Japanese woman.

[ our friend from Chattanooga may be onto something ... but i had to google King's X. listed under "Christian Rock," they nonetheless shared a label with the likes of Cannibal Corpse, GWAR and Slayer. other curious fact is that they're the second Christian band i've heard about lately with a gay drummer (the other is Roadside Monument) ]
