Cultural differences

Monday night the missus and I watched the last episode of Wire in the Blood's second season on BBC America. It's a pretty good detective show set in Leeds about a professor who profiles serial killers and a cop who catches them. We were discussing whether certain aspects of the show were "realistic," when Mme B pointed out that in the series, no one seems to think it's particularly remarkable that serial murders take place week after week. Being American, I hadn't given the scenario a second thought.

I have a hard time turning the channel on a tv show, even if it's total crap. Case in point, curious about the show "Desperate Housewives" I tuned into that turd Sunday night for the first time. I knew within 5 minutes I would never watch the show again, but I watched the whole thing, growing depressed and antsy as the wasted minutes of my life bled into commercial breaks.
Your reviews of "THe FAmily Guy" and "THe Office" were irreverant bull's eyes, I'm looking forward to the BBC detective show. Thanks for the post.
on the question of not being able to turn off the tv, even when it's crap, neuroscientists have weighed in. years ago they discovered that the brain is filled with tiny "magnets" / small surprise, then, that an electromagnetic field, such as those associated with televisions and, yes, computer monitors would have a significant effect (presumably the temporary re.alignment of said "magnets" while in the presence of said field...).
I haven't managed to get into Desperate Housewives, either, but I think it's the kind of show you have to watch every episode of, like Deadwood or Lost, if you're gonna have any chance of following it. There's a lot more of this episodic TV these days; I wish I had a schedule that let me plan to catch stuff every week. For example, I really like 24, but I usually just wait for each season to come out on DVD. HBO shows are a lot easier because Comcast has them on its On-Demand service. So the question is: Do we all get TiVO?
