Amateur fascists 1, Richmond 0

Yet another sign that this area isn't quite ready for prime time: The Chesterfield school system canceled an appearance by a gay author after a successful email campaign led by a bunch of pillars of the community. "What is being taught in our schools?" wondered the subject line of one of these emails. Guess that question got answered. (You can send an email to Chesterfield schools yourself if you like.)

i read these posts - and have come across similar information elsewhere - and i say, "okie.doke, there's some Metro Richmond suck, sure!" but it doesn't reconcile me (at all) to Roanoke / which will soon be hosting a Journey tribute band in the New Arts Venue downtown. a sweet touristy advert for this Dying Railroad Town might read: "Roanoke: Things Suck Differently Here!"

anyhoo...

the frustration, hedbakery, is that richmond is a bigger city -- about the 50th largest market in the country. you'd think that the endlessly recited aspirations for cosmopolitan greatness would lead to a more tolerant atmosphere. but no.

as for RVA versus the star city, i'd trade you monument ave. for a brazilian restaurant and the o. winston link museum.

i appreciate your position, markblogger.

...and thinking about Places, i see more of a East vs West dynamic than a North/South one. Roanoke, not unlike Pittsburgh, sits in the neglected west of an eastern state (i love p.burgh, btw, and am amused that writers for the Post-Gazette feel free to publicly express their wish that Philadelphia be annexed by New Jersey [*their* words/sentiments, not mine...]). Eastern VA appears to be another country, with landed WASPdom and not a particularly mixed population. and the Southwest? a repository for the detritus of Ulster (and lest we forget, the Melungeons in the far southwest upon whom the vile Mr Plecker* waged war during the eugenics craze of the early 20th century...).
